i was denied lawyer during court for eviction, is this legal?

i was served an hour in a half before court. had no time to prepare. I appeared in court i asked for a continuance i was asked the reason and i replied i had only an hour and a half to prepare i also asked for my attorney. but the judge continued is this legal?
